NON-STANDARD POOL COMP INITIAL REFERENDUM

All,

We need to make a fairly urgent decision on the issue of non-standard pool comps. It is very possible that this Wed night could leave us in the same situation as last week should the attendee numbers be that low again.

So here are what I see as the basic issues that we need to address. Please consider these and contribute to the online discussion (forget work, it's a Monday after all). If these questions are agreeable to all, we will post a poll on the website with the view to resolving this prior to Wed night.

Unlike with John L's favourite namesake, Little Johnny, we shan't be confusing the referendum question by tying complex conditions to a fairly basic question and therefore guaranteeing the result.

Read more details on the surveyNON-STANDARD POOL COMP REFERENDUM

1. Should we allow 16-player comps at all? Yes/No

2. Should we allow 24-player comps at all? Yes/No

3. Should ANY non-standard game (i.e. not 32 players) qualify for points distribution? Yes/No

4. If we do allow non-standard comps to earn points, should we:
a. allocate full points (i.e. 16 pts for 1st, etc),
b1. allocate half points (i.e. 8 pts for 1st, etc) - 16-player comp
b2. allocate 75% points (i.e. 12 pts for 1st, etc) - 24-player comp, or
c. use some other form of scoring which may be more fair?

And another question remains which may be more difficult to decide upon. It may require that we use a one-off solution this Wed should we find ourselves in this situation.

5. If we allow 24-player comps, how do we decide the 2 finalists? Suggestions requested.

I also think it fair that whatever is decided here is retrospectively applied to last week's game. The only other option for last week is to use the existing precedent which means that, as a non-standard comp, no points will be awarded.

Well, actually there is one more relevant question:

6. Should we allow John L to continue playing in the comp as we need to keep a certain minimum standard of play?
a. yes, cos he's improving and he's so lovable,
b. no, cos I never liked him anyway, or
c. only if he buys us all a drink (after Mauro has, of course)

Mail Server OK

All, I had a quick look at the mail server over the weekend and it seems to be stable at this stage. Apologies for the downtime, not that anyone noticed ;)

Make a comment and tell us how great we are for getting the server back up-and-running

Mail Server Offline

On Wednesday afternoon the hpdp.org.au mail server went down, affecting all inbound and outbound mail from hpdp.org.au. This also affects the mailing list.

I have left the machine offline pending an investigation of the cause. I will recover the machine as soon as I get a chance, hopefully this weekend.

Please don't hesitate to post any questions as a comment

And The Winner Is....

Congratulations to Phil for taking out the Nick Power Cup 2 years in a row.

Read the Full Press Release, check out the official photoIt was a splendid, record-breaking effort albeit against a backdrop of lacklustre performances from the other contenders. I suspect Bo could have had something to do with this through her provisioning of certain performance-degrading substances... well at least I blame it on that. The doping committee have been advised and will be conducting random testing shortly ;)

Good on ya, Phil!

!! Nick Power Cup Final !!

Well, tonight's the night. Another thrilling, nail-biting finale to the Nick Power Cup.

The bookies are nervous... the odds are going wild... the contenders are pacing anxiously in the gates... the punters are roaring with excitement in the stands... ahhh, where was I again?... must be the caffeine.

So, is it going to be Gozzo (66), Jo (54) or Jink (34) to have their name added to the prestigious list of NPC winners? Or could it be Phil (61), Dean (42) or perhaps even yours truly (at 29, a definite underdog, so plentiful support from the eager fans is expected) to have the honour of having their name twice on the coveted trophy?

We'll just have to wait and see as the third and final stage progresses this evening. Come one, come all and make it the special event it always is.

Good luck to everyone!! May your balls be with you (errr... non-sexist remark intended).

Bush Tucker Day at Trundle 2004

Hail rain and sunshine, the mix couldn't dampen the enthusiasm of John and Col, food judges at the recent annual Bush Tucker Day at Trundle (pop: 600) in outback NSW.

It was a task and half tasting 68 dishes including pigs head, rabbit, kangaroo and yabbies, though their two beautiful female co-judges made the task that much easier.

Erietta also attended as an assistant to the adjudicator. Thanks as well to Eri for the photos. Accomodation at the Capell sheep and wheat property 14 km out of Trundle was wonderfully mind altering and a lot of fun.

Can't wait till next year!
